Hmm...interesting.
The subject matter is a bit corny,football?!! Is it really worthy of those lyrics?? And im not sure the core audience of footy fans will appreciate it, as its a bit falsetto fr them, but in some ways its a case of pearls before the swine. If it wasnt about footy it would probably be pretty good. A song for Haiti would have been more appropriate though i guess. It does grow on you though, it reminds me a bit of the 1994/5/6 NPG era, it sounds a bit Girl 6 ish to me. Like the female vocals too - Bria?!?! I LOVE Purple & Gold for three simple reasons:
1) It's crazy. No-one would have predicted Prince would release anything like it. If you want nice songs by a predictable act, buy a Coldplay album. 2) Prince is a global artist. Releasing a local song about a football team shows that he has bigger cajones than anyone. 3) I have been singing it since first listen. And if it had been a 1983 b-side, it would be considered a 'hidden gem' classic by now. Love it! Somewhere Here On Earth | |

Everyone either defends or excuse it because it is a "fight song" but it's still Prince and frankly I DO hold him to a different standard with his music. Otherwise I had a lot of choices of music to listen to. Once Prince came out in the late 70s i HAD no choice!! lol. Now I'm back to plenty of choices. |

To me it's interesting.. but it's like if I were having a dream, where in my head all the wrong things got mashed up.. like weird Parade outtakes, the opening bit from "the Black Parade", the ending of "3 Chains of Gold".. and a football game. It's just strange. But it didn't make me do the WTF reaction I had to "Wedding Feast". Whatever happened to Tony M anyways now that you mention it? I just know somehow he's responsible. LOL | |
